Vast.ai vs Runpod
Compare a specific Vast host with a specific Runpod Pod. Vast prices are host-set; Runpod separates Secure and Community Cloud. A GPU label and an advertised hourly price do not describe the whole environment.

Consider Vast.ai
Evaluate Vast.ai when you are comfortable selecting a host, inspecting its limits and testing a particular offer for your workload.
Consider Runpod
Evaluate Runpod when its Pod deployment workflow and storage options suit your team, after choosing Secure or Community Cloud explicitly.
What you are comparing
| Compare | Vast.ai | Runpod |
|---|---|---|
| On-demand offer | Host-set on-demand rates. Interruptible offers have a different interruption policy. Source | Billed by the second; no term commitment. Inspect the exact Pod price at deployment. Source |
| What you purchase | Rent an instance from a marketplace host. Source | Rent a Pod. This guide compares Pods, not Serverless or Instant Clusters. Source |
| Access and operation | Choose an instance and deployment template; inspect the host offer before renting. Source | Choose a GPU Pod and storage configuration for your environment. Source |
| Location | Host-specific. Select a region and verify the individual listing. Source | Secure Cloud uses data centers; Community Cloud uses peer providers. Confirm the selected region. Source |
| Stored data | Host-set storage charges continue while an instance exists, including when stopped. Source | Container disk is temporary; volume and network storage have separate persistence and billing rules. Source |
| Data transfer | Upload and download rates depend on the host offer. Source | Pod documentation states no data ingress or egress fees. Source |
| Capacity and interruption | Inventory and price vary by host. Interruptible instances may be paused. Source | On-demand Pods cannot be displaced by other users. This is not a quoted uptime guarantee. Source |
Committed offers
Vast.ai
Reserved instances use prepayment; inspect the selected offer and term. Source
Runpod
Prepaid three- or six-month savings plans; storage remains separate. Source
40-hour experiment
For a 40-hour run, use the same model, GPU edition and GPU count on both services. Vast host transfer fees can matter when staging large datasets. Runpod documents no Pod ingress or egress fee, but compute and storage still need to be priced.
30 days always on
If you stop compute between sessions, compare retained-storage costs and restart capacity as well as the running rate. Runpod distinguishes temporary container disk, volume disk and network volumes. On Vast, inspect the host's stopped-storage price and maximum rental duration.
Multi-GPU workload
Begin with one node of the required GPU count, then inspect topology and run the same tensor-parallel test. Do not use this Pod-versus-instance comparison to infer multi-node cluster performance, network guarantees or distributed training throughput.
The interactive quote worksheet uses whole-instance rental rates multiplied by 40 hours or 720 hours for a 30-day period, plus entered storage and transfer. Missing inputs are unknown. B3IQ acquisition plus first-month operating costs uses a different purchase unit; it is not a break-even calculation. Taxes, financing, setup costs, future operation and resale are excluded. No hypothetical rental earnings are subtracted.
Decide how much interruption you can accept
Checkpointable batch jobs and interactive development have different recovery costs. Vast interruptible offers can be paused, while Runpod's documented on-demand Pods cannot be displaced by another user. Neither statement replaces the service-specific availability and maintenance terms.
Test the thing you will keep running
Pin the container image, model revision, quantization and context window. Record time to load, time to first token, sustained throughput and restart behavior. This guide has no matched performance measurement, so it does not award a speed or price-per-token winner.
