Runpod vs Lambda

Runpod Pods and Lambda instances both rent GPU capacity. The decision starts with the environment you need: a Pod and its storage lifecycle, or Lambda's instance configuration and software stack. Match the GPU edition before comparing rates.

B3IQ editorial. Sources checked 2026-09-30. Published by B3IQ, a GPU machine seller and hosting provider. This is our assessment of documented offers, not a matched performance test.

Consider Runpod

Evaluate Runpod if the Pod workflow, container templates and choice of storage fit how you deploy and restart work.

Consider Lambda

Evaluate Lambda if its GPU instance configurations and Lambda Stack fit your workload and the region you need has capacity.

What you are comparing

Runpod vs Lambda: on-demand or purchase offers
CompareRunpodLambda
On-demand offerBilled by the second; no term commitment. Inspect the exact Pod price at deployment. SourceMinute billing. The single-H100 SXM list price is per GPU-hour, before applicable taxes. Source
What you purchaseRent a Pod. This guide compares Pods, not Serverless or Instant Clusters. SourceRent a GPU instance; the page lists one-, two-, four- and eight-GPU configurations. Source
Access and operationChoose a GPU Pod and storage configuration for your environment. SourceInstances include Lambda Stack; provisioning is available through the UI and API. Source
LocationSecure Cloud uses data centers; Community Cloud uses peer providers. Confirm the selected region. SourceCheck region and capacity when allocating an instance. (Confirm with provider.) Source
Stored dataContainer disk is temporary; volume and network storage have separate persistence and billing rules. SourceThe example single-H100 SXM instance lists 2.75 TiB SSD. Check persistent storage separately. Source
Data transferPod documentation states no data ingress or egress fees. SourceThe instance page advertises no egress fees. Source
Capacity and interruptionOn-demand Pods cannot be displaced by other users. This is not a quoted uptime guarantee. SourceSelf-serve on-demand access is first-come. A public price does not reserve capacity. Source

40-hour experiment

The worksheet uses a single H100 SXM as the comparison target. Lambda publishes an exact single-GPU list offer; enter the matching Runpod Pod quote. Compare the same runtime and model revision, and price the disk you need for loading weights and writing checkpoints.

30 days always on

For a 30-day always-on workload, use 720 hours and include storage that survives restarts. Both services document no egress fees for these products, but persistent storage arrangements differ. A discounted multi-GPU or committed rate is not interchangeable with the single-GPU on-demand quote.

Multi-GPU workload

Lambda's per-GPU rates vary by instance size. Multiply the rate by the actual GPU count before comparing it with a whole Pod. For jobs spanning nodes, obtain cluster-specific interconnect and storage specifications; neither a single instance nor a Pod quote establishes those capabilities.

The interactive quote worksheet uses whole-instance rental rates multiplied by 40 hours or 720 hours for a 30-day period, plus entered storage and transfer. Missing inputs are unknown. B3IQ acquisition plus first-month operating costs uses a different purchase unit; it is not a break-even calculation. Taxes, financing, setup costs, future operation and resale are excluded. No hypothetical rental earnings are subtracted.

GPU edition is part of the price

H100 PCIe, H100 SXM and H100 NVL have different memory and platform characteristics. The worksheet's H100 SXM example cannot settle a comparison against another edition. CPU, host RAM and local disk can also change the time your job spends waiting for data.

Reserve only after the experiment

Test your model and recovery procedure before committing to a savings plan or a capacity agreement. Get region, term, prepayment, cancellation and storage charges in writing. Public list prices are a starting point for on-demand planning, not a guarantee of available capacity.
